I Don't Get These Shoes

At all...
Doesn't Pee-Wee Herman wear a version of these shoes in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure?  They seriously remind me of clowns, and someone please slap me if I ever in the next year come around to these shoes...

Chicago: Part 2, The Outfits

My challenges for Chicago were: a) Limited access to my actual closet, b) The weather, c) Walking everywhere.

I am skipping my outfit for day 2 because every shot, I had a lazy eye.  This day was actually one of the nicer days in Chicago.  The weather was beautiful, and I thought tights would be a good idea.  This is also the outfit that I wore to see Conan.  As you can tell from my previous images on Chicago, I opted out of the tights because it was just too hot.

Black marching band jacket: H&M
Gray v-neck: American Apparel
Black and white polka dot skirt: Clothing Xchange, AmyB
Black lace tights: Urban Outfitters

Our last day in Chicago, we spent almost three hours in the Art Institute.  We stopped in the gardens outside the museum and took pictures.  This garden is absolutely BREATHTAKING!  I knew I would be traveling this day, so I wanted to keep everything pretty simple and cozy.

Silk woven scarf: Urban Outfitters
Boyfriend jeans: J.Crew (Buffalo Exchange, and remixed to boyfriend jeans by just rolling them up)

And just for fun, a little outtake.  I tried a jumping shot, but can I be real? I apparently make the most horrible faces when I jump.  I look like I am trying to give birth or something.

Hope everyone had a wonderful memorial day!  And Happy Tuesday!  Stay tuned for some big news!

Remember that time...

Hi.  Remember when I had a blog, and I updated it frequently and I was not in Dallas at a conference?  Those were good times, and no need to worry because I am BACK!  I had a great, restful, although unproductive weekend (unless you call catching up on the previous two episodes of Lost productive).  Anyways, before I left, I took some pictures of myself by a tree and tried to place my body so you would not see the neighbors trash bins.

Oh what is that you see?  Something you have never seen before?  Something VERY pretty?

A few weeks ago I got some wonderful news.  I had won the Jess LC jewelery give away from Selective Potential!  I could not be more stoked about this.  This necklace has been in HEAVY rotation.  It is incredibly simple and elegant!  I really love it!  Thank you to Tieka for hosting this give away and thank you so much to Jess LC for creating such beautiful pieces of art!

(PS- with this much of a close up on my chest... haha, I wanted to address one small thing.  I have a big pink scar on my chest, yes I do.  I have had it since high school, and its annoying and not very pretty but its there regardless.  I'm going to be undergoing some treatment (AGAIN) to reduce the size and color of it, which should be interesting.  Basically, I have to get shots of cortisone into the scar... oh and yes its painful... REALLY painful).

Maid Braids

Even though I posted two blogs yesterday, I feel like this is my first actual blog post of the week.  Hello everyone!  How was your weekend?  How was your Monday?  Yesterday didn't really feel like Monday, it felt like a different day of the week entirely, and whatever day that was, oh it was rough.

After reading an article about braids on the Ready Made blog, I then surfed over to their youtube suggestions as far as braiding tutorials went, and found me a milkmaid braid tutorial.  I thought it looked really cute, but it totally weirds me out not having a ton of hair around my face.  I will be honest, I am totally narcissistic about my sometimes.

I have so much good news to share though.  First off, I am working with a few other bloggers here in Nashville to get a fashion blogger meet up going.  If you would like to be involved, just let me know either though a comment or on Twitter.  Secondly, my dear friend Tori got accepted to the School of Visual Arts in NYC for her graduate studies (beyond thrilled!!!!!).  Third, I won a cook book from Ready Made, Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution (score).  This next one I'm going to share with you pertains to yesterday's post; my mom has officially lost 50 pounds!

Needless to say, today rocks.  And, totally means a celebration, in the form of mexican food in my belly (nom nom nom nom nom).

Today's outfit is a little hint into what I've got going on for tomorrow.

An Interview with Basse Mode

With the ongoing animosity between fashion journalists and fashion bloggers heating up, fashion is falling more into the hands of the customer and real people rather than the editorialists.  Even with the introduction of magazines like Lucky Magazine, fashionistas are no longer looking towards the publications that once were the pillar of the fashion industry.  We are wanting practical fashion at practical prices.  Fortunately, a group of fashion bloggers are rolling out a magazine called Basse Mode.  I had the chance to interview the creator and founder of Basse Mode, Lauren Cooke and her passion for this has only made me want to get involved more.

Where did the name Basse Mode come from?  Does it have any special meaning?
When we started thinking of the name for the magazine, we knew that we wanted something that symbolised what we stood for. We started off thinking about ideas around "real", but then realised that the real message running through the idea was the message about "low fashion". This sounded much better in French, and so the name of the magazine was born!

How did you become interested in fashion?
It was something of an accident. When I was younger I pretty much just wore what my mum dressed me in, and I never even considered that someone might judge someone on what they wore. Then I wore my flowery dungarees to school on a plain clothes day, and was mocked. I think this awakened my mind to the fact that what people looks like can actually change the responses they get from other people, which has disappointed me to this day. From that moment on, however, I started developing an interest in the inner workings and psychologies of the world of fashion - and almost by accident I discovered a love of shoes and my own personal style. I still don't buy into the whole trends thing, and think that fashion (as in the world of models etc) is absurd - but I have also discovered a way to dress like "me".

What designers or bloggers are you inspired by?
I started blogging because of Cie at Secondhand Shopper, and it was a while before I became fully immersed in the world of blogging. However, some of the bloggers that I got to know first of all (either personally or just vicariously through their blog) were Amber, Becki, Nubby and Fleur. I find them all inspiring both in terms of fashion, and in the loveliness that they portray!

How did Basse Mode get started and what inspired you to create this?
I had been thinking about how wonderful it would be to buy a magazine the featured all the stuff I love in fashion blogs. And then, after a conversation on Twitter with Emma and Fi, it actually happened. We decided that even if it never goes to print we would love to show that people want it to happen, and so the blog was born to raise awareness - and hopefully to ensure that one day it is a reality.

Do you have any fashion goals or mantras that you live by or tell yourself often?
Just to be myself. It sounds simple, but this really is one of the things that I try hard to be, even though you would think it was obvious! I generally believe if someone doesn't like me for who I am, then I probably don't like to know them!

Any advice for beginning fashion/style bloggers?
Always write about things that you are interested in. If you write well and interestingly then people will read you, it is unavoidable! Oh, and also to get involved in the community, it is one of the most important parts of the fashion blogging world.

If you want to get involved with Basse Mode, visit their website and start spreading the word.  They are currently looking for all sorts of contributors.  Thank you to Lauren for letting me interview her, and make sure to go check out Basse Mode on their blog and on twitter.

Electric Cowboy in the Afternoon

I would like to say for the record, I am keeping up with my must list.  I have worn heels at least once a week every week since I started that thing.  Yesterday I paired this preppy and casual skirt with some sky high black patent leather heels (not pumps because pumps are comfortable actually).  Today, I want a pedicure but thinking that might be dumb because of the blisters I got from wearing these shoes.  Oh the things we go through to look chic...  I wanted to look a little more dressy because I was meeting up with some friends for $5 martini happy hour at Eastland Cafe.

This shirt is pretty famous because its the shirt from all my profile pictures.  I love it too.  It is so bright and brings a lot of great color to my face.  It reminds me of a shirt my mom had back in the 80s.  The funny thing about this shirt, the name on the tag is 80's electric cowboy.  The skirt on the other hand is one of those items that you have in the back of your closet and you keep it because its just classic?  I knew it had been a while since I had last worn it because both my roommate and Sam said, "Where did that skirt come from?"  Well, when I worked at Gap five years ago, I bought this skirt with my employee discount.  I am glad I never sold it or gave it away because I finally get the chance to pull it back out of my closet and give it some new life.

Also, a HUGE thank you to Apryl at 365daygirl for featuring Alyson Is Neat today on her blog!  I was so excited to see it come up in my RSS feed this morning!  I feel like Apryl writes about my whole life.  Her blog is an excellent combination of fashion and style, as well as, SEO and online marketing.  Go give her some love!

You can judge the whole world by the sparkle that you think it lacks...

First off, THANK YOU.  Thank you to everyone who has gone and RSVP'd for Sam.  If you haven't yet, you need to.  Right now (or before the 16th).

Do you ever find those items in your closet, and you wear them and you realize, "How could I ever forget about you?  You are so darling?"  Oh, you don't talk to your clothes?  I'm a freak for talking to my clothes?  Well I can deal with that.  This skirt is one of those items.  I loved it so much I wore it two days in a row.  And I wore it last week.  Weather was so nice, I got to bare my legs.

Finally, do you like me?  Oh!  You do?  Okay well then can you become a fan of me on facebook.  All you have to do is click Become a Fan in the widget and probably login to facebook if you are not logged in.  I did this in an attempt to curb the constant updated on my personal facebook profile.

Take the temperature and double it, an homage to warmer weather

I gigged as I wrote that title, because I just got back from seeing Cop Out.  Tracey Morgan sure can make me laugh, oh my goodness.  Anyways he says that he is doing an homage but says it like hoe-mayj.  So funny.  Go see it or go rent it when it comes out on DVD.

A few days ago when this image popped up in an e-mail from Urban Outfitters, instinctively, I clicked until I found those rain boots.  This image made me want to lay out by the pool in my green polka dot swim suit, sip drinks on outdoor patios, and be out all night without a jacket or tights.  My favorite summer wardrobe is swim suit bottoms (or lets be honest just underwear) and a t-shirt.  Its one of those combinations that I just feel pretty and comfortable.

My family is taking a trip to Florida in September and I am beyond stoked to be going to the beach.  Also, the house we are renting has an outdoor shower with hot and cold water... AND a juicer!  Sam and I longingly gaze at the juicers in the kitchen appliance aisle hoping that one day if we play our cards right, we will get one.  Some couples want a salad spinner or a pastry mixer...  we just want a juicer.

I feel like, I have to be honest here.  So, I put together an outfit yesterday but from the beginning I didn't have a good feeling about it (which is mostly why I'm not sharing about it).  Like I said earlier, it was bone-chillingly cold yesterday and I am so done with the cold weather.  Anyways, I ended up hating everything about how I looked yesterday...  I felt frumpy and because I didn't wash my hair, a little gross.  Before I headed to the east side to go to Sam's house, I changed.  I put on my trusty cashmere gray sweater, skinny jeans, oxfords, and socks.  This outfit made me feel comfortable, sophisticated but most importantly WARM and I didn't take a picture of it because my hair still looked gross.

British Navy

Do you have your go to colors that you just know will look great on you, no matter how you match them all together?  Although this outfit is mostly neutrals, I love how it all came together. I have been dying to try wearing knee socks with something, however, the weather is not cooperating too well.  Yesterday, I paired them over some nude fishnets and with some suede heels.

This is my outfit from yesterday and today, I am feeling a bit under the weather.  My drink of choice is tea and chloraseptic spray.  I think its just a little bit of a cold, but I'm definitely feeling its effects. Don't forget to check out my giveaway!

Remember my relationship with kelly green?

I really love this color.  I can't say it enough, I love this color.  This outfit was incredibly inspired by Rebecca from The Clothes Horse.  She wore something very similar and posted about it a few days ago.  This dress is one of those summer and spring staples.  It is great to wear to bridal showers, dates nights, concerts.  It is so comfortable and to be honest I spent WAY too much money on it back in the I-was-spending-way-too-much-money-on-clothing days.

I feel like a 1940's Pin Up

Thank you all so much for all of your comments and support with my "I Must" list.  I am so excited to start knocking things out on that list.  One thing I forgot to add is to find some killer red lipstick.  I love the shade I am wearing in these pictures but its a cheap tube of L'Oreal that I picked up when I was in a pinch.  So I'd like to become a pro of red lipstick.   I want to find the perfect shade for me and wear it a lot.

This outfit is definitely inspired by Zoe Deschanel.  The whole look is inspired by her really.  I put hot rollers in my hair, put in a headband, wearing fun chevron-like fishnets and black mary jane pumps that despite their 3 inch heel are so comfortable.  Also, in case you can't tell I am totally in love with my new glasses.  Interestingly enough, the "skirt" is actually a summer swim suit cover up that is supposed to be worn as a skirt, but I wear it as a strapless dress.  It is my go to easy summer dress because it is so comfortable and really chic.  I am actually wearing it as a strapless dress with the top over it...  actually I just checked and its totally fallen to my waist so its a skirt.  :)  I am really jonesing for warmer weather.  Its in the low 30s here in Nashville and I am craving 60 and sunny with a breeze.  How about sundown, 60, porch, breeze, beer, sundress, friends, grilling, and I'm getting ahead of myself.

An ode to all the boys I crushed on in high school

I have always been attracted to guys that are WAY cooler than I am (BTW Sam is WAY way WAY cooler than I am).  In high school I crushed on the guys that were into Weezer and just really great music.  I was really too shy, and plus this douchey guy I dated was all somewhat friends with some of these people for a short amount of time.  Anyways, this outfit is my tribute to that time in my life where I wished I had the balls to dress like this, but didn't because I was lame (Well I did dress like this kinda..)

Maybe this is because last night I folded my laundry and gawked at the line up to Bonnaroo to Raditude (the latest Weezer album) and danced around in my new glasses...  Oh, yes, these are the new glasses.  I went with a pair of Ray Bans with the rivets on the side.  They are tortise on the inside and then an espresso brown.  I LOVE THEM.

Sweater: given to my by A, J.Crew (I love this sweater and yes I wear it once a week)
T-shirt: Beatles Abbey Road T-shirt, Forever21
Jeans: Gap, DIY dyed
Shoes: Chuck Taylors
Brown Tights: Gap

Thanks to my wonderful boyfriend Sam for taking these pictures.  He is so impossibly cool and has the best taste in music.  For real!

A response to @thecoveted and Devil's Advocate - an opinion piece

*This is an opinion piece.  I have a very strong opinion but unfortunately on some things I'm not as educated as I would like to be.  I simply just wanted to share some of my personal thoughts on the ethics of blogging.  Feel free to not read if you'd like.*

I want to come clean about something.  You, my readers who don't personally know me, should know that I work for a company that specializes in software for online marketing and PR.  I have never tried to hide this, and to be honest just google my full name and  you can see where I work.  That's my day job and in no way is my blog affiliated with my day job.  In fact my day job merely gives me the opportunity to put what I'm learning and doing at work, into what I'm doing personally with this blog.  This being said, and being a "blogger", I wanted to respond to the article "Devil's Advocate" that Jennine posted on The Coveted as well as Independent Fashion Bloggers.

There is a line when it comes to ethics and blogging.  However, since this transformation of the medium of blogging, this line has only become fuzzier.  As a blogger you have to ask yourself a few questions:

1.  Why am I doing this?
2.  What do I hope to get out of this?
3.  How transparent am I willing to be with my readers?
4.  Should I accept money or free stuff?

To be honest, I have not really had to deal with "sponsored content" on here.  Let's be honest, I am encouraging my readers to not go shopping and instead shop within their own closets... not exactly an ideal place for so and so online store to be advertising.  I am still purchasing shoes, tights, bags and other accessories because I can't make shoes, tights, bags (well kinda) and other accessories.  But even then its been of ebay and in thrift stores.

"But what about those icons over in your sponsors area?" Been meaning to address this one, those are affiliate links.  Basically, if you happen to be on my site, and click on those, I get a percentage of the sale...  nothing huge.  Also, I don't overtly promote those two companies on my blog.

As a blog "reader", if I was given content to read that was sponsored content, I would want to know about it.  Unfortunately there are bloggers out there that are perfectly okay with not saying, "Today's content is sponsored by so and so company."  By the way, the FCC has said this isn't allowed anymore.  As a blog writer, say a company approaches me about sponsored content, up front, the article has to say that its sponsored.  If a company gives me something so that I will write a blog post for them, I will say that I accepted a free gift in exchange for content, and report it where necessary.

Today, Jennine also posted a tweet that bloggers were being sent invitations to fashion week in exchange for posting pre-written content from that company.  This makes me a little sick to my stomach.  Yes, going to fashion week would be a DREAM, but damnit, I will not be told what to write and what to say in exchange for an invitation, and these bloggers that are being given this... they need to fess up.  (Just my opinion)

I think magazines and bloggers are in the same boat here.  No one can give an honest assessment of a trend, a line, a designer, if that trend, line, store, designer has their hand in that blogger or journalists cookie jar.  Magazines and editorials receive invitations, gifts, clothing, and goodie bags in hopes that they will write about it in their magazine (come on we've seen in on The Devil Wear's Prada and Kell on Earth).  I think it is unfair for magazines to get their panties in a bunch because fashion bloggers happen to be making a splash in the fashion world.  But to make it completely fair, it is the opinion of myself that bloggers should be transparent with their readers regarding sponsored content.  The good thing, is that from what I can tell, all the ones in my blog roll are transparent.

What I think is so beautiful about the fashion blogger phenom is that these are real women, real consumers, real customers, hopefully writing about what they love to wear, how they love to wear, who they love to wear because they enjoy it and not just because they are getting paid to do it.  Instead of the Ana Wintour's of the world telling designers what to do, fashion blogging gives designers direct access to their target market.  When its done right and when its done honestly, I believe that we as fashion bloggers can change the way the fashion world is.  Maybe one day we won't be seeing these 5'11" little sticks of girls and men prancing down a catwalk, but we may actually see a real woman wearing these clothes.

I think we have a rare oppurtunity in this day and age to directly influence a medium that's still operating on the age old traditions that have been around for centuries.  Although some designers would argue, fashion is for the people and not just for those who have the money and the job in order to flaunt it.

Jennine, your post was wonderfully written and I agree with you.  I hope that comes across in this post.

Soap box surrendered.

Tiger's Blood, a snow cone story...

I have very fond memories as a child of snow cones.  I loved snow cones, and never one to be normal, I really loved unique flavors.  Last night Nashville got a light dusting of slush.  Its very snow cone-esque and today's outfit reminded me of Tiger's Blood flavor.  I think it was grape and cherry and strawberry all mixed together but it was my favorite.  It turned my tongue and lips a deep dark red and I loved it.  In fact, I still love it even though my taste in frozen treats has only grown more dignified as I have aged.  I spend my summers longing for gelato and the love nest at Mr. Snow in Waco, TX.

This weekend I stopped by Clothing Xchange because I had a gift certificate that I was itching to spend.  Of course, I skipped the clothing (oh it was so painful) and went straight to the shoes.  I tried on at least five pairs of shoes and walked out with two pairs (spending under $10).  The ones I am wearing today are a black, brown and tan Florsheim low pumps.  They make me feet look so dignified.  Don't worry, I brought my rain boots to work so that I can stomp around outside in those instead of my new shoes.

Also new, are the tights.  I had an entirely different outfit envisioned for the super bowl party I ended up attending, but wore something completely different.  The first option required tights, and since I didn't want to wear solid black tights and the only other color I had were my suffocating purple ones and blue (which I was not cheering for the colts), I needed some with pizzaz.  Thank you Urban Outfitters and your 2/$20 special on tights.  These are actually incredibly comfortable, and not suffocating (I also bought a bigger size! woot!).  I will say this though, I can't wear something too short with these, I feel like going above the knee and seeing the flower pattern on the tights totally stretched out is not flattering.

Geaux Saints!

Three days, that's about how long I have had a headache... Life just kind of sucks when you feel like your brain is trying to split itself open.  This means, no outfit post of my Monday because you probably don't want to see me in my pajamas. :)

However, Sunday I got dressed in my black and gold to support the Saints.  I attended the annual boyfriend's delayed holiday party at a local bar here in town.  And this is what I wore on that fun and festive occasion!

Sam took these pictures, and it was so nice to be in a different setting, and having an actual person behind the camera!  We stopped by my favorite resale shop Clothing Xchange because I still had $17 of store credit.  We stopped outside and we snapped a few photos.  I think they turned out great!  This last photo is of a bag that I bought.  I have really been on the lookout for a really great purse.  I thought I found one at Target but there was just nothing special about it.  This was the right price and the right purse.  Its so large, I can stick my head and one shoulder in it.  I LOVE THAT!

Jacket: H&M
T-shirt: American Apparel
Jeans: Express
Shoes: Borrowed from a friend
Purse: Urban Outfitters, $19.99

I'm so glad the saints won the super bowl!!!  Wow!  I am still in total disbelief!

The color navy

Third day in a row that I am smiling in my pictures... I mean you would think that I am in love with life and full of joy!  Remember several days ago when I wore these tights and these shoes again, and my legs looked squatty and I thought it was because of the length of my dress?  I WAS RIGHT!  This dress is one of my favorites and it was a total steal on clearance at the Gap two years ago.  I love wearing it in the summer with some strappy sandals and wavy beach hair.  I have not yet worn it during the winter until today.  I decided to winterize it up and its also warming up here in Nashville for the time being; which is good because I'm tired of walking like an old woman through the yard.

I also decided to give purple tights another shot.  I am going to try and have better posture which will hopefully not make me feel like I'm being cut in half by my tights.  Oh by the way, that's not a smudge on your screen or a funky thing in the picture, I have a tattoo on my left wrist, you can see it in the third picture.

This just got real y'all

Here is the deal.  Today is one of those days where "life" trumps "blog".  I have been awake since 6:00 AM after a night of really not sleeping well, so that I could take my car into the mechanic at 7:30 AM.  I did not wash my hair, or even brush it.  So its probably a good thing that the top of my head is being cut off in this picture.  You all know what these boots look like, I don't need to show you a full shot of them.  I am exhausted, looking a little rough but ya know what... this is real life!  This when I don't really give two poops what I'm wearing or what my hair is doing (or I would have brushed it...)  I didn't even get coffee until almost 9 AM (thanks to my wonderful, beautiful co-worker Alison).  I had to take my picture at work because there wasn't enough light this morning to take a picture in my usual spot.

Here is what I'm wearing

Sweater: J.Crew, given to my by a friend cause she didn't wear it anymore
T-shirt" White Hanes V-Neck
Jeans: Express
Legwarmers: Mama!!!!!!
Boots: Anthro

If you need me, I'll be napping on my keyboard in between e-mail and IMs.

Plaidy plaidy, flannel flannel

Yesterday was a lot warmer than it is today... man, I'm watching snow fall outside my window this morning, FOR REAL!  However, this photo is from yesterday and I still need to get some good shots of me today because the ones I took were too dark.

So plaid.  I love plaid, and I love plaid when it is in unexpected colors.  This warm brown, blue, purple, and yellow plaid is beautiful.  I paired it with some bling (its actually a medal that I put on a necklace).  Nichole from Cut and Sew posted pictures of her plaid and how she dressed it up.  I definitely took a more casual approach, but plaid is one of those things that adding some sparkly can really take it up a notch.

Pre Fall Runway 2010 - Celine

I know, its not even the end of winter yet (hello Nashville is getting, what has been deemed by the lovelies at Nashvillest, #thesituation2010).  However, this collection by Celine is too delicious to pass up.  I love her use of neutrals and VERY bold colors.  Here are a few of my favorite looks.

Celine is using several looks that incorporate the monochromatic leg, a look that will be easy and flattering come fall.  The use of embellishments and belts is nothing new; I can look all over the blogosphere and see the use of feathers, sequins and splotches of color.  This is fresh though.  Instead of the typical fall hues, a vibrant punch of REAL color.  I love the use of red, especially because red is incredibly wearable by all different body types.  I cannot wait to dive into more of what is going on at Fashion Week this weekend.
