Where have all the comments gone?

A lazy day:
American Apparel gray v-neck
American Eagle sweater vest
Green Old Navy shorts
Fake Birkenstock's Urban Outfitters
Necklace: Beacon's Closet

Let's talk blogging for a second.  So, after some very amazing publicity on IFB, I had a completely life altering disaster happen to me and all of that great publicity kind of went out the window.  I'm not saying it does not matter and was not effective but the timing of everything was not on my side, and instead of swinging with that momentum... Alyson Is Neat took a major crash landing.  I took some time away from my blog to get my life figured out, and ever since then, my little beloved bloggy blog has been struggling.  So I want to ask my audience, readers, lurkers a few questions.

Why the silent treatment?  I'll be the first one to admit, yes I've been doing this blog for over six months and it is way frustrating to be lacking in traffic, but I've always made up for it with loyal commenters.  However, somewhere along the way... you guys disappeared.  I have more readers, however, I'm not able to keep you attention...  why is that?

What would you like to see?
Are my outfits getting tired?
What would you like to see more of?
What would you like to see less of?

And I invite you to answer these anonymously if you don't feel comfortable sharing.  Come on, be BLUNT HONEST AND HARSH.  I need some criticism or something.

  1. To be honest with you, my commenting policy is more or less that I will leave a blogger a couple of comments. If they don't return my comments on my blog or start following my blog, I will still read their blog, but I'm less inclined to comment because it doesn't seem that they're into the community aspect of blogging as much as I am. I have to really, really, really love the blog and the outfit (or whatever) to keep commenting if comments never get returned.

Everyone's different, so I'm sure there are a multitude of reasons behind the internet silences.

  2. I think it's a slow season overall - people are traveling, posting less, etc.

I wonder if people saw you got a lot of exposure on IFB and felt like you needed the comments less because you were getting press? You know how that happens sometimes - it makes something look larger than it might be and the original supporters feel like their comments matter less? (I guess this could be paired with La Historiadora's comment, too.)

A lot of times I mean to comment on blogs but I'm reading it from my iphone and I star them in my reader to comment later but then forget.

In general I like to see outfits and hear what people are doing.

  3. I tend to not post a comment unless I really, REALLY love the outfit or if I have something constructive to say. And I feel like I rarely have anything constructive to say. :) I wish I did!

As a working mom, the outfits that I like the most and comment on the most are the ones that are geared towards office-wear or are a little bit dressier. I comment less on casual outfits because casual ones just don't seem to grab my attention as much. This goes for all of the blogs that I read, not just yours.

You ARE adorable, don't feel like you're lacking in that aspect! :)

  4. Hey Alyson! If a lot of readers/bloggers are like me, then it definitely means you have tons of readers, they just don't comment. I tend to skim through tons and tons of blogs each day, and it hardly ever occurs to me to comment, but since starting my own, I understand how each and every comment can become such an important thing to the writer! I always enjoy reading your blog, so just because I don't comment, doesn't mean I'm not reading!! xoxo

  5. Yeah I'm one of those followers who doesn't comment, and I know how you feel, I hardly get any comments and it can be frustrating like why am I doing this? I have the problem that I read everything in the posts but if I can't think of something quirky to write then I won't comment because I think if I just say "great outfit!" it isn't sincere enough sounding for a blog, that's more like a social networking site.

But I DO like your blog because you have real style, you reuse things in different ways. I have problems when I see these girls all done up and different outfits everytime, nothing about their fashion is obtainable to me. But you are real, and I see myself in you. I don;t know how that came out, hopefully complimentary.

And I've wanted to say this, my sister's name is Allyson... not many Y's around. :)

  6. Also I wish there were reply areas for comments, then the blogger could interact with the comments... damn blogger for not having that standard.

  7. Yeah, I rarely comment a blog. I only comment if I have a question, or if the post is something like that "I bought this dress, but might return it, what do you think?" and then I'll comment with what I think.

But I agree with what someone said, it's summer and people are traveling and gone all over the place. I'm sure things will pick up again, but it may take some time.

  9. I'm with one of your other commenters ~ when I start following a blog I usually leave a comment or two, and if there is no return visit, blog follow, or a simple comment within your own comments saying "thanks for following, or reading, or commenting" then I would be less inclined to make a comment in the future. As you know exposure is important to many bloggers as is commenting and following too... (especially for those just starting out). Share the love!

    But, I too still visit...

    Hope that's helpful!

  11. As a blogger, rest assured that summer is ALWAYS slow for comments. People travel and catch up later... it's not just you!

  12. I think I've commented a few times, but mostly I "lurk" on your blog. I don't know any particular reason why. It's like that with a lot of blogs. I don't mind leaving short comments like "cute dress!" every once in a while, but I don't want to leave those every danged day so after a while I stop leaving comments if I can't think of anything more interesting to say. I mean, I like your posts (which is why I read in the first place) but if all I can think to say is "I like this outfit! Looking great!" I'm less inclined to actually leave that comment. It's no fault of yours. It's just me being boring!

  13. I like your blog and you inspire me to be more creative, resourceful and thrifty. I think you're doing a good job. I've had it in my reader for a few months now. I usually read blogs in break moments while I am writing and only when I have long stretches can I comment. Like other folks have mentioned, I usually only comment on the blogs with which I feel a sense of community/relationship, but I like reading and seeing peoples' outfits even if there is no rapport.

  15. I guess I haven't been leaving as many comments- just because summer gets busy and I'm not at home very much! I really do read EVERY ONE of YOUR POSTS so don't worry if I'm lacking in communication I just moved for the 2nd time in 3 months and am living in a show home that has to be clean 24/7 so its hard to get online and just read every day. I also don't have wireless-so its hard to be in the office just to get online. OK- there are all my excuses :) Does that help?

I've been having the exact same problem with comments. My traffic is fine, up even, but the comments are just gone!

I think eveybody is just lazy for summer? I know that's been my problem.
