Fashion Tip Friday - Copy Someone's Look

I'm not too sure how copying someone's look is perceived in the online fashion blogger realm.  I will say this, I am constantly inspired by the outfits people put together and that I come across on a daily basis.  That being said, I want to give you some practical ways to borrow from the outfits that you see on the street, in magazines, and on the fashion blogs.

Figure out what you like about the outfit.
Is it something about the unique color combination or the mix of prints?  Do you like the proportions that an outfit gives the body?  Often, when someone wears something new it takes so much bravery and confidence.  If they can pull it off, there is a light in their face that they are absolutely comfortable with who they are and what they are wearing.  Looking at what they are wearing, figure out what it is that you really like about it.

Do not go buy an item.
Of course I am going to say this.  Do not go buy clothes just to look like someone else.  Do not, do not, do not.  Buy clothes that you LOVE.  I have not bought a single piece of clothing since November 16th, almost two months.  Part of the fun of being fashion forward is using what you have to get the desired result which leads me to my next point.

See what in your closet you can use.
Once you have figured out what you like about an outfit, start laying pieces out that you think capture the feelings, the essence, the proportions or the color scheme of the outfit you are trying to copy.  Perfect example, my outfit that I posted today, is actually copied from a picture I saw on the Practical Princess blog.  This one to be exact:

Let's get practical.

I loved the color scheme in this outfit, and also saw it as something that I had the clothes to pull it off.  My favorite was the red cardigan and purple scarf combination that she has on in this picture.  I also thought this would be the perfect way to incorporate shorts and tights into an outfit that I could wear actually out in public (even though she has bare legs).  I took my red cardigan, borrowed a purple scarf from my roommate and made the whole outfit warmer by wearing tights, boots, and legwarmers.  Trust me though, once this weather turns warmer, I'll definitely sport this outfit more.

I think we often get overwhelmed with fashion because we think that we have to go buy the latest and greatest.  But if you get a few key pieces and just mix them in creative and fun ways, you can still get the desired fashionista look.  My biggest struggle with not buying clothing for a year has been exactly this.  How can the clothes I wear be different, if I'm wearing the same stuff I've been wearing for the past several years?  That's the beauty of clothing, is that you can wear it however you want.

Go look out on those fashion blogs and get inspired.  Try a look that is completely new to you, and wear it with confidence.  As I said in my first fashion tip Friday post, own it!  I truly believe that, like sports, fashion is 80% mental and 20% what you are actually wearing.

I hope everyone has a great weekend, I will be sewing (screams and jumps up and down)!

  2. Great post! I love how your outfit turned out in the previous post...it is inspired by the photo, but definitely still your own!

Regarding the crutches...I actually had a reconstructive hip surgery in early November, and had been on crutches since! I wasn't able to keep up the blog the way I had wished as I recovered, so it is so exciting and freeing to finally be able to walk and take outfit shots again!!

  3. You make a good point about not buying something when you're extremely inspired by someone else.

That's the danger of fashion blogging, you fall in love with other people and want to be like them.
