Plaidy plaidy, flannel flannel

Yesterday was a lot warmer than it is today... man, I'm watching snow fall outside my window this morning, FOR REAL!  However, this photo is from yesterday and I still need to get some good shots of me today because the ones I took were too dark.

So plaid.  I love plaid, and I love plaid when it is in unexpected colors.  This warm brown, blue, purple, and yellow plaid is beautiful.  I paired it with some bling (its actually a medal that I put on a necklace).  Nichole from Cut and Sew posted pictures of her plaid and how she dressed it up.  I definitely took a more casual approach, but plaid is one of those things that adding some sparkly can really take it up a notch.

Pre Fall Runway 2010 - Celine

I know, its not even the end of winter yet (hello Nashville is getting, what has been deemed by the lovelies at Nashvillest, #thesituation2010).  However, this collection by Celine is too delicious to pass up.  I love her use of neutrals and VERY bold colors.  Here are a few of my favorite looks.

Celine is using several looks that incorporate the monochromatic leg, a look that will be easy and flattering come fall.  The use of embellishments and belts is nothing new; I can look all over the blogosphere and see the use of feathers, sequins and splotches of color.  This is fresh though.  Instead of the typical fall hues, a vibrant punch of REAL color.  I love the use of red, especially because red is incredibly wearable by all different body types.  I cannot wait to dive into more of what is going on at Fashion Week this weekend.

Effortless and mini

Holy smokes!  Look at that!  I'm wearing heels!  This doesn't happen often, especially because since my work environment is SUPER casual, and I am one of three females in the office, it makes no sense for me to clomp around.  But I love these pumps!

This top is one of those that spans all seasons.  I wore it this summer, fall, and winter.  It is great paired with skinny jeans and boots, and also a pair of tiny shorts.  I had never thought to pair it with my favorite mini skirt for a look that was so effortless and easy.

Yesterday, a little poopy...

My roommate and I used to joke around that our lives should be filmed just because you would not believe the stuff that happens to us.  Yesterday was one of those days.  It all began at about 4:30 PM when we had a minor office emergency, and I walked next door to see if they had a plunger (lets refer to this as 1).  However, no one answered.  I came back to the office empty handed... or so I thought.  You see, I started to smell something a little funny.  Passing it off as perhaps my breath, because I had Easy Mac, peanuts, coffee, and hot chocolate, I went ahead and left work and went home.

Last night, I was determined to make cheese enchiladas.  Sam was coming over and I wanted to get some chores done around the house.  I started picking up things and putting them away including a DVD I had left on the kitchen table.  As I set it in the DVD stand, I walked away only to hear the DVD stand crash to the ground (this will be 2, and it happens all the time).  I frantically picked up the DVD's warding off B the dog who had to know what was going on with all the movies on the floor.  I unloaded the dishwasher, and then was going to sweep up a bit.  Over by the trash can I saw a leaf on the ground, and went to sweep it up... however, it was not a leaf.  It was poop (3).  Everything started to make sense, the funny smell, the odd "leaf" on the ground... when I had walked over to the next door office neighbors I stepped in dog poop!  Hobbling outside I frantically started rubbing my foot in the grass hoping for some of it to come off.  I removed my shoe and came back inside huffing and puffing.  Taking a cue from Anne Lamott, I mentally put a note in God's In Box that said, "Seriously?"

Into the bathroom I went, armed with a scrubby brush and ran the poop shoe under water trying to remove as much of the grossness as I could (4).  Then I looked down and noticed that as I was scrubbing the poop off my shoe, the stiff bristles of the brush were flicking the watery sludge onto my clothes!  The entire lower right side of my body was covered in little speckle sprinkles of POOP!  I decided to do the best that I could with the shoe, which mean I stuck it on the first step out to the garage.  Trying to put the whole poop shoe behind me, taking a deep breath, I started changing clothes when I get a call from Sam.  His car is messing up... again (5).  He couldn't come over to my house, I had to go over to his.  Mentally, I took the note out of God's In Box and added an exclamation mark and put it back in, just like Anne would.  Surely, nothing else can surprise me now as I swiffered the entire house.

I packed up the cooking supplies and headed over to Sam's house, where we made the most disgusting cheese enchiladas I have ever eaten in my entire life (6) and watched 3 full hours of America's Funniest Home Videos (quite possibly one of our favorite shows on television)...

Before all of this happened though, I looked pretty darn cute.

I have had this sweater since high school...  I am not kidding.  I bought it with my own money in high school from American Eagle and I thought I was sooo cool.

Cardigan: American Eagle Outfitters circa 2002
Tank: Gap circa 2005
Jeans: American Eagle Outfitters
Shoes: Naturalizers, Ebay

I took a safety pin and tied a piece of ribbon to it to make the sweater just look a little bit special.  I thought it looked preppy and pretty.

My post poop splatter outfit, was similar but with regular jeans, a blue tank under the sweater and just some shoes I had lying around in my room since I was in a rush.

With that, here is to Wednesday!  And I hope its better than Tuesday.

ooeeeoo I look just like Buddy Holly

This weekend Sam and I braved the ridiculousness that is Opry Mills Mall to go to chain store for me to look at glasses.  I really really wanted to see if I could pull of the original Ray-Ban Wayfarers... but no.

Sorry for the major ug-face but I was not impressed.  I mean, I look like Jack Lawrence.

However, I did try on tons of glasses in a not so extreme style, and I wanted to show them off.

Ray-Ban New Wayfarer style (they only had blue, I would want black or tortise).  I really liked these.

Another style of Ray-Ban's (my personal favorite too but I want to see them on me in black)

I am pretty excited about getting new glasses, but I wanted to get some second opinions.  Which one is your favorite?

Old sweater, new tricks

Before I get into pictures, I just want to say thank you so much to the outpour of support I received yesterday.  Your comments and words touched my heart, I even cried.  Thank you, I really appreciate every single person who reads this, really.

I hate this sweater.  This sweater is one of the reasons I decided to stop shopping because the fact that I bought this sweater is proof that I have a problem.  As you will see in the next photo, it is ugly.  The stripes, the shape is funny, the color is nice, but its overall a pretty ugly sweater.

That is why I decided to make a bow with my American Apparel scarf that I wear all the time.  I tried it and looked in the mirror... it looked kinda cool.  Way better than the ugly funky striped sweater.  So this just goes to show you, when you are not shopping for a year, the ugly sweater you bought when you were shopping, can still be salvaged into something semi-okay.

Ugly sweater: Target, purchased because I was going to a hockey game and didn't have a long sleeve to wear.

Frustrations and pushing through

Photo courtesy of the amazing and wonderful Miss Kelsey Foster

When I was in college, I had this theory regarding boys.  If I never said out loud that I liked a boy, then it simply was not true.  Every once in a while, I keep things hidden and stuffed because I think if I don't say it out loud, then its not true (by the way this is also known as denial).  About two weeks ago, I was sharing with my community group that I was feeling really motivated about my blog, sewing, saving money, not shopping, and yoga.  Sam was calling me Miss Proactive (not the face wash, I used it during summer camp and got this crazy chemical burn).

Then it started creeping up on me, doubt.  Doubt hopped in bed with me one night actually.  I woke up in the middle of the night in panic and in fear from a dream.  I have been having doubt and insecurities about the blog and myself and how it all fits together.  I started wondering if I was pushing myself hard enough.  Even though, I want this blog to be just for me, and something that makes me happy... I still want people to read it.

Doing this can be really frustrating because sometimes you can get so caught up in who is wearing what, all the comments others are getting, feeling like you are completely late in the game, everyone is on weardrobe and chictopia and facebook and twitter and blogfacesomethingwhatever...  and I'll be honest, I don't get it.  I feel like I'm working my ass off on this blog, at my job, and in my life and I just feel like I'm so behind or like I missed some fashion wagon that came by on October 7th when I was in the bathroom!  AND on top of that, the one thing that makes me feel like I can get ahead I can't do.  Curse you no shopping year... curses on you!!!

This is usually when I scream...

and remind myself that I have to just take this at my own pace.  I also need to find some positive ways to move forward.  I've been toying around with paying a graphic designer to help me come up with a logo.  Which means I need to figure out what I would want a logo to look like. I've also been toying around with e-mailing other bloggers and asking them if they will link to my site if I will link to theirs (which I really don't want to do because I feel totally desperate and needy in asking that but I know that its totally normal to exchange links).  I have also wanted to maybe start advertising on some other blogger's sites and getting some fashion stuff going in Nashville.

I want:
-more visitors and more exposure
-a striped shirt
-black shorts (so I'm not having to wear my thin little black jumper and so I don't have to take my shirt off in the bathroom)
-a "bye" week for my no shopping so I can shop at modcloth
-a pony
-something pink, or floral, with ruffles.

But, what I need is:
-to finish reading Traveling Mercies by Ann Lamott (thanks C)
-so I can start reading Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke (thanks A)
-to finish my skirt
-to be satisfied with what I have and who I am
-to take a deep breath
-to pause
-to feel
-to remember and reflect why I am doing this
-a pony (maybe)

I know:
-I have a unique voice
-I am a great writer
-I love what I'm doing and how it makes me feel
-I wear jeans a lot
-how to use the timer on my camera
-it is part of the natural process of being creative to doubt, but I will not let that doubt control me.

Thanks for reading...

Well, hello new shoes!

On Friday, I wore this outfit.  Usually, I don't take pictures of what I wear on the weekends because I most likely just wear t-shirts and jeans or comfies.  Anyways, after looking at pictures of this dress, tights, shoes combo... I realized something.  My legs look a little stumpy.  Funny because as I was getting dressed in my room I thought to myself, "I think I might hem this dress a little bit."  So I think I will.  Hem it to mid thigh?

Dress: H&M
Belt: Fred Flare
Tights: Gap
Scarf: Spice in Waco, TX
Shoes: Naturlizers, Ebay!

YES!  I am totally in love with these shoes.  I got them on Thursday and wore them Thursday night and all day on Friday.

I must be honest though.  I think its time for me to go up a size in tights.  I love these tights, I love the color, however, they are simply too tight especially in waist.  On Friday, I had sushi for lunch and because my tights were so tight, my food wasn't digesting correctly and around 3 pm I felt so incredibly sick.

On that note, happy monday everyone!

Fashion Tip Friday - Rockin' a T-shirt

In honor of my somewhat laziness this week, I wanted to honor a wonderful piece of my own personal wardrobe which is the T-shirt.  I love t-shirts, the traditional t-shirt and also the more fitted t-shirt.  Because of college and working with non profits and musicians a few years ago, I got quite the collection of the basic traditional t-shirt.  I also bought a ton of graphic t-shirts from Urban Outfitters and Forever 21 as well.  The great thing about the t-shirt is that they are always perfect to layer under cardigans, sweaters, dresses, etc, and probably one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can own.

Mash graphics and patterns together.
I love taking a bold graphic and mashing it with a classic pattern, such as polka dots.  Pairing a graphic t-shirt with a dress can take even a more classic looking dress, and give it a little bit of edge.

Stretch out the neck.
One of the great things about cotton is with an easy wash, it snaps back into its former shape.  Cotton jersey can and should be stretched.  To make a normal everyday t-shirt look a little more "rocker chic", stretch the neck out with your hands.  I did this with my outfit I posted today, because I wanted a little bit more of an edgy slouchy look with my t-shirt.

Get high quality.
Most bands and organizations have realized the marketing appeal when people actually wear a shirt, instead of just sleeping in it or jogging in it.  They have opted for a higher quality t-shirt rather than something cheap.  In my day job, part of our marketing is providing t-shirts to customers.  We realized that our customers were more likely to actually wear the shirts to events, if the shirts actually looked good.

Looking back through my archive even in just the few weeks that I have been chronicling my outfits, I wear a lot of t-shirts.  This week a couple of different bloggers and I discussed the idea of a personal "signature look", and I will majorly own up to the fact that a t-shirt is a huge part of my signature look.  I have always loved pairing t-shirts with unexpected clothing, and encourage you to take your everyday t-shirt and pair it a flirty high waist skirt, or tucked into a pair of low rise jeans with a boyfriend cardigan.

F-You Rain, really F-You...

I feel like the entire United States is covered in a giant rain cloud.  The weather is so crappy, I'm totally over it.  Hence the tongue sticking out.  Yesterday's outfit was inspired by how much I didn't want to get out of bed.  I also didn't realize how much I was inspired by Calivintage, but apparently I was, a lot.

Cardigan: Urban Outfitters
T-shirt: For free and freshly made outside some random show at Exit/In
Capris:  DIY dyed Gap
Shoes: Urban Outfitters
Sunglasses: Thrifted, Buffalo Exchange Denver

I need to confess some things this morning, get some things off my chest.

1.  I really like wearing jeans
2.  The only thing I like more is not wearing pants at all (but that's private)
3.  I am going to make cheese enchiladas tonight
4.  This whole Conan thing, makes me sad, because it is really sad.  I hope you all take the time to watch these last couple of shows because they are hilarious, and he's a comedic genius in my opinion

On a more serious note, I do want to take just a moment and discuss what is going on in Haiti.  If you believe in the power of prayer, please do it.  If you don't, send money to the Red Cross or another relief agency.  This is such a devastation, words can only begin to describe what is going on there.  Look at pictures, remind yourself daily of what is going on and find a way to get involved.  The Haitians are going to need as much help as they can get.

So I wear glasses...

The funny thing about this comment is that I always wanted glasses.  I remember going to the eye doctor when I was a teen and hoping for glasses, but instead got told I had great vision.  Thanks to working at a desk with a giant 30 inch monitor, I now wear glasses.  I started having issues about a year ago with my vision.  I got my first pair of glasses.  I was thrilled.  I threw out my pairs of fake glasses (yes, I wore FAKE glasses a la thick black rectangular frames and light brown rectangular cat eye frames.

The glasses I wear now are great, very classic but don't really make a statement.  They are more, "I'm so pretty and smart in my glasses".  I'm wanting to get a pair of statement glasses on the days and nights that I want to make... well... a statement?

I started jonesin' on the Ray-Ban Wayfarer style, but I am not sure if any stores in Nashville actually carry this style of frames.  When I voiced this to Sam, he got so giddy and excited.  I mean he loves Rockabilly culture, and I think the fact that I could wear these and my jeans rolled up just affirmed to him that I was cool.

I have also looked at some other styles of frames, too.

I think these would be a little smaller than the wayfarers but still in the same family.

What do you guys think?  Is the big eyeglass trend dying out or here to stay?  The more I look at the prefall runway shows, the more I lean towards saying they are here to stay.

Don't Give Up

Lately, I have not been wanting to get dressed in the mornings.  I've been exhausted, tired, and bummed by the weather.  Its cloudy and rainy here in Nashville which only makes me want to curl up under a blanket with a cup of tea and a good book.  However, this mantra has stuck with me, "Don't Give Up".

I first saw this shirt that I'm wearing on Etsy several months ago.  I had told my boyfriend and parents to let me know if I was getting this for my birthday or I would have ordered it.  Well, I didn't and I couldn't order it because I wasn't going shopping for a year.  It would have been a little poetic if the last piece of clothing I purchased was a shirt that said Don't Give Up.

Print Liberation offers premium American Apparel Track T's with bold block letters.  I fell in love the with Don't Give Up Tee and Tote combo.  I love this shirt...

Tan oxfords anyone?

Okay, I haven't been looking THAT hard for a pair of these, but I have been looking.  I looked in thrift stores and what not, and I checked Ebay.  I wear a size 9 shoe and it is difficult to find "vintage" or "thrifted" size 9's because its just not popular.  I used to hate my feet.  I would buy flared jeans because they made my feet look smaller.  This is the same issue I have with skinny jeans as well  Often, I would like them to fit a little more straight than skinny because my feet look huge (or at least I perceive them to look huge).

Skinny jeans were hard for me to find anyways.  I have big feet, muscular calves, and I'm a little on the short side, 5'5' on a good day.  I love the look of skinny jeans, but can rarely find ones that look great on me.  This is why you will often see me sporting boot cut jeans as opposed to skinny jeans.

So I got on a skinny jean tangent to finally be able to release this little nugget of info.  I had been holding these shoes hostage on ebay (I'm really good at ebay).  They are a pair of Naturalizer Tan Oxfords in a size 9!  Yes!  Sorry I didn't talk about them before but there could have been another oxford searcher, with size 9 feet out there.

They are on their way from Chicago, but I'm way excited and can't wait to start wearing them this winter and into the spring paired with dresses, tights, shorts, skirts, and pants!

Neapolitan Ice Cream...

As I was staring at this outfit in the mirror, I kept thinking that it looked like something.  Then it hit me, neopolitan ice cream.  However, I don't know who would want to eat gray ice cream...  but let's just pretend, okay?

The weather here in Nashville has been warming up a little bit so I opted to roll up my pants and show off those milky white ankles! I also LOVE these mauve/pink jeans.  They have a great detail on the back pocket (which is why there is a picture of me from the side, because well posting a picture of my butt would be weird... way weird).  Wearing colored jeans can be a huge risk and a little difficult.  I paired these with a subdued color palate and then oomphed the color with a sparkly scarf.  To be honest, these jeans had no hanger appeal.  I was with Sam and he picked them up and encouraged me to try them on because he really liked the color.  I was still only slightly convinced but got them anyways.  Now, I love them.  I love pairing them with neutral colors because it makes me just feel pretty.

Speaking of aprons....

It is amazing how putting fabric into a shape, totally transforms the way it looks.  This print is really bright and fun, but I was not too sure what it would look like once it was put into a shape.  As soon as I started cutting out the pattern, it turned into a super cute print.

This took me about a half a day to complete.  It is one of the more advanced items in Lotta Jansdotter's book Simple Sewing, but I totally appreciated the challenge.  The most difficult things for me was putting in the tiny pleats at shoulders of the apron and keeping the straps inside while sewing the solid yellow to the print.

Ya know, I may just wear this with a sweater jacket, jeans and a t-shirt one day.... just watch!

Blogs I Follow - Amateur with an Apron

I must admit, I could be a little biased about this one because its my roommate!  Lisa cannot eat gluten, cow's dairy, or soy... So everything she cooks cannot contain any of that.  Which meant that Lisa actually had to learn to cook, and boy has she!  She started her blog Amateur with an Apron to share how she is coping with the absence of bread, cheese, and soy. Last night she made tacos for dinner for the two of us, and they were so great and flavorful!  She wasn't sure if they would be weird for me since they wouldn't have cheese, but I really didn't miss the cheese.

Boyfriend Cardigan

Why buy a boyfriend cardigan, when you can just borrow your boyfriend's cardigan?  Seriously, I have been waiting to use that line all weekend!  I wore this outfit Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.  I love pairing a boyfriend cardigan with a long v-neck t-shirt and jeans.  It is super cozy.  I love the stripes in the cardigan, and the arms are so comfortable!

Cardigan: Boyfriend's from Gap, but probably thrifted
T-shirt: Urban Outfitters
Scarf: American Apparel
Jeans: Thrifted, Buffalo Exchange Chicago
Shoes: Toms, gift

Monday, I was super drained, and tired.  I didn't wash my hair which is why its a little messy and I braided my bangs because they get so gross.  My hair type does not have an affinity for being dirty.  It doesn't look messy and bed-heady, at times it just looks GROSS.  Yesterday morning it didn't though!

I may have a total of three posts today, but don't get too used to that.  I really want to share my completed apron today, but also have an amazing blog to share with y'all.  I am just going to do two separate posts.

I sewed...

On Friday afternoon, I kept running to the door at the slightest murmur of a heavy brown truck driving down the street.  I was giddy, and when the box finally showed up, I popped off the couch and a part of me came alive.  I spent most of early Friday evening reading through the manual on my sewing machine.  I couldn't wait to get started on a project, any project.

Friday night I hung out with friends, and Saturday spent time with Sam.  But Saturday night, when I got back to the house.  I sewed...  I sewed!  It didn't matter that I was all hunched over and that my upper back was being tied in knots (I can just do some yoga to undo that).  I wanted to master this machine.  I wanted to get a feel for the pedal.  I broke threads, I rethreaded and threaded, and threaded the machine again and again, and again until I finally got the tensions right.  I got in a fight with a zipper, and the zipper foot and I became really really good friends.  I won the fight with the zipper by the way, but the muslin skirt got a little injured.

By the way, I realize that not everyone knows what a "muslin" is.  A muslin is a term used for making a prototype of the pattern.  Basically you make the pattern with an expensive easy to work with fabric (like cotton muslin) that way when you go to make the actual garment, it ends up looking less janky than the muslin.  Its also perfect for getting the fit correct on a garment.

I washed a scrap of the fabric I want to actually make the skirt out of just to see what happens when you wash and dry it like normal.  I am very glad I did this, because now I know to just let the corduroy air dry.  By yesterday afternoon, I started on my next project: an apron.  With a lot of straight stitching, and nothing too fancy except some pointless pleating on the shoulders, this project allowed me to really get a feel for my machine.

I am absolutely hooked.  I am going to post a picture of my apron tomorrow because I didn't have a chance to upload my pictures this morning.

A few of my favorite things

This outfit from last Thursday is actually a combination of me wearing some of my favorite pieces.  I felt confident and beautiful, because I was wearing things that I knew were flattering and surprisingly worked really well together.  I wear some of these things on a weekly basis!

Fashion Tip Friday - Copy Someone's Look

I'm not too sure how copying someone's look is perceived in the online fashion blogger realm.  I will say this, I am constantly inspired by the outfits people put together and that I come across on a daily basis.  That being said, I want to give you some practical ways to borrow from the outfits that you see on the street, in magazines, and on the fashion blogs.

Figure out what you like about the outfit.
Is it something about the unique color combination or the mix of prints?  Do you like the proportions that an outfit gives the body?  Often, when someone wears something new it takes so much bravery and confidence.  If they can pull it off, there is a light in their face that they are absolutely comfortable with who they are and what they are wearing.  Looking at what they are wearing, figure out what it is that you really like about it.

Do not go buy an item.
Of course I am going to say this.  Do not go buy clothes just to look like someone else.  Do not, do not, do not.  Buy clothes that you LOVE.  I have not bought a single piece of clothing since November 16th, almost two months.  Part of the fun of being fashion forward is using what you have to get the desired result which leads me to my next point.

See what in your closet you can use.
Once you have figured out what you like about an outfit, start laying pieces out that you think capture the feelings, the essence, the proportions or the color scheme of the outfit you are trying to copy.  Perfect example, my outfit that I posted today, is actually copied from a picture I saw on the Practical Princess blog.  This one to be exact:

Let's get practical.

I loved the color scheme in this outfit, and also saw it as something that I had the clothes to pull it off.  My favorite was the red cardigan and purple scarf combination that she has on in this picture.  I also thought this would be the perfect way to incorporate shorts and tights into an outfit that I could wear actually out in public (even though she has bare legs).  I took my red cardigan, borrowed a purple scarf from my roommate and made the whole outfit warmer by wearing tights, boots, and legwarmers.  Trust me though, once this weather turns warmer, I'll definitely sport this outfit more.

I think we often get overwhelmed with fashion because we think that we have to go buy the latest and greatest.  But if you get a few key pieces and just mix them in creative and fun ways, you can still get the desired fashionista look.  My biggest struggle with not buying clothing for a year has been exactly this.  How can the clothes I wear be different, if I'm wearing the same stuff I've been wearing for the past several years?  That's the beauty of clothing, is that you can wear it however you want.

Go look out on those fashion blogs and get inspired.  Try a look that is completely new to you, and wear it with confidence.  As I said in my first fashion tip Friday post, own it!  I truly believe that, like sports, fashion is 80% mental and 20% what you are actually wearing.

I hope everyone has a great weekend, I will be sewing (screams and jumps up and down)!

Is it spring yet?

I am definitely loving shorts in the winter.  I just get so tired of the cold, that I will suffer just to feel the air (albeit cold) on my legs.  This outfit is great because it provides a pop of color with a lot of neutrals.

My favorite part of this outfit: the leg warmers that my mother made me for Christmas.  (Uh! I die, they are the best).  I have been wearing these about once or twice a week since my mother gave them to me.  They are really warm and pair perfectly with my boots.

Cardigan: Urban Outfitters
Shirt: Gray V Neck American Apparel
Shorts: DIY Cut offs
Tights: Sweater, Target
Leg Warmers: PurpleFase (my mother's etsy shop)
Boots: Anthro
Scarf: Borrowed from my roomie
